Partners In A Diverse Community
The community is invited to Reading Frederick Douglass Together, a public recitation of his Fourth of July address.
Crescent Ridge will have ice cream there, coloring pages and activities for children. If you would like to read a section of the address please reach out.
On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass gave a keynote address at an Independence Day celebration and asked, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”
Douglass was a powerful orator, often traveling six months out of the year to give lectures on abolition. His speech, given at an event commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence, was held at Corinthian Hall in Rochester, New York.
Reading Frederick Douglass Together is sponsored by the Sharon Historical Society, the Town of Sharon Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, the Sharon Racial Equity Alliance, the Sharon Pluralism Network and other community groups.
The Sharon Historical Society is located at 16 High St.
