What is Pluralism?
The concept of “pluralism” broadens our view of integration and assimilation to include recognition of the fact that religious, ethnic, and cultural differences among people can be a source of personal and civic enrichment, infusing vitality and strengthening community and inclusion with and among the various groups in town. When fostered in the context of openness, acceptance, and understanding, celebrating and negotiating with one another across our differences, it can overcome fear of the unknown (“the stranger”) and can result in engagement with one another. It encourages us all to find common ground in the realization that there is more that connects us than separates us.
